Buxton Postcards

Old Buxton Postcards

Buxton in Derbyshire is well known for the spa water that rises naturally from a geothermal underground spring. The water always rises at 28 °C and is popular with tourists visiting the town, many taking a drink from St Ann's Well. Buxton water is also marketed extensively. The spa water was thought to have healing properties and during Victorian times, the town was very popular.

The town has some great architecture and history. The Old Hall Hotel is one of the oldest buildings in town. Other prominent architecture includes The Crescent (Currently being renovated 2017) and the Opera House, built in 1903. The Opera House is still a popular venue for many big names and attracts great crowds. The Pavilion Gardens is another beautiful aspect to the town and provides a most enjoyable stroll before a show at the Opera House. Buxton Festival is a popular attraction and brings many tourists to the town.

Backbarrow Postcards

Backbarrow Postcards

Cumbria is where you will find the village of Backbarrow. The village is in the Lake District and lies on the river Leven approximately 5 miles North East of Ulverston. Corn mills were once the prominent trade of the village but were soon to be accompanied by the town's Iron works.

The village is also known for the production of Ultramarine or "Dolly Blue" which actually gave the whole village a blue tint due to the dust from the factory.

The Lakeland Motor Museum is also definitely worth a visit.

Bamforth Postcards

Bamforth Postcards are probably the most recognised saucy seaside postcard series ever produced. Their postcard story began in Victorian times with James Bamforth, the son of a Yorkshire painter and decorator. The company was based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.

Bamforth originally used his talents to produce painted lantern slides but later moved to photography which proved more successful. By the 1900's the slides had evolved into what we know now as Bamforth postcards. The humorous postcards covered social aspects of life such as sex, drinking, marriage but are always done with innuendo. Bamforth postcards were hand drawn by artists from 1910 which is quite an accomplishment when you look at how many different postcards were produced.

Apparently, the printing works where Bamforth postcards were produced has now been converted into residential apartments.

Holmfirth was also the location used for the long running BBC comedy Last of the Summer Wine which ran from 1973 to 2010.
